Wreck was featured in the DePaul University AMD Senior Showcase Exhibition at DePaul Art Museum in June of 2016. The project was created as a senior thesis for digital photography. Cheap, build-your-own IKEA furniture is a staple in many young peoples’ lives nowadays. The need to invest in a home that can easily be taken down, torn apart, or even destroyed within a year only to build a home all over again is a recurring theme in the age of rising rents and low wages. Wreck is an exploration of the relationship to and sturdiness of that “flimsy” furniture.
Purchased for $30 back in 2016, this RAST dresser has been assembled and disassembled upwards of twenty times, has been drowned in Lake Michigan, covered in sand, dropped down a flight of stairs, shoved in a minivan on a drive from Chicago to Los Angeles where it survived two apartments, then driven in a small sedan from Los Angeles to San Diego, where it was nearly dropped off the back of a pickup truck in the move to its current home in central San Diego. And it is still being used to hold clothes today.
The triptych Wreck has been purchased. For next run prints, email firstname.lastname@example.org. Keep an eye out for a continuation of the RAST series once I can find an alternate storage solution for my t-shirts.
